WickRight Test Results...

Internal and Third Party Evaporation
Testing in Progress.

WickRight is currently conducting testing of a WickRight Vapor Release System to document the rate of water evaporation from Split Face Block walls. All final test results will be posted here.

Variables being tested internally include Split Face Block walls capped with WickRight Coping VRS, WickRight Capstone VRS, Traditional Metal Copings, Limestone Capstones and Manufactured Capstones. All walls were sealed on all four sides with masonry sealant to manufacturer standards. All walls were built in a temperature-controlled facility and mortar was allowed to dry completely. "Dry" moisture measurements were taken. All walls were then saturated with 5 gallons of water, then warmed with a radiant heat source on one side for 12 hours up to a surface temperature of 77 degrees, then allowed to cool to room temperature of 68 degrees for 12 hours, with a fan blowing constantly at 10 mph. Moisture measurements are taken every 72 hours.

The illustration above is a cross section of a split face block wall typically found in the Chicago area in buildings constructed between 1990-2009. This is not a preferred construction method. Unfortunately, 90% of the buildings we've worked on in the last 3 years have been built in this manner.

The illustration also indicates the proper placement of WickRight Parapet Vent Coping and Interior Wall Assembly pieces, WickRight Coping VRS and WickRight Roof VRS.

Many of the buildings we have worked on have been constructed without thru-wall flashings at the joist pocket. These flashings help drain moisture away from the wood joists/truss system. If a building does not have thru-wall flashings in place, we recommend installation of WickRight Breathe Weeps in the vertical mortar joints below the joist pocket.

Patent-Pending WickRight Capstone VRS™
is a multi-layered vapor permeable device specifically designed for use under capstones and to do two important jobs:

1. Seals the top of the wall, preventing additional water absorption from the capstone.
2. Allows moisture to continuously release from the parapet wall core and flow out through the WickRight vapor release portals.

Capstone walls are also finished with the WickRight Roof VRS, Interior Wall Assembly and Breathe-Weep to completely seal the interior side of the parapet wall and roof system termination point while providing necessary ventilation.

1. Patent-Pending WickRight Coping VRS™
is a multi-layered, vapor permeable device that is installed on top of the parapet wall (and some mansard roofs). It allows air flow into and moisture vapor release from the parapet wall core and out the vapor release portals.

2. Patent-Pending WickRight Roof VRS™
is a multi-layered, vapor permeable device puts essential breath-ability between the parapet wall and the roof system to vent moisture from the roof system and cavity.

3. Patented WickRight Parapet Vent ® Coping
is a corrosion-free, interlocking parapet wall top and bottom coping unit and interior wall assembly that completely prevents water from entering the top and interior side of the parapet wall. It even seals the roof system termination point.

4. Patent-Pending WickRight Breathe-Weep™
is a multi-layered vapor permeable device designed to direct excess moisture away from joists and truss systems. It is placed in vertical mortar joints beneath thru-wall flashings.

Mystery Leaks?   Wickright roofing and Masonry Repair in Chicago.

Wickright stops Water leakS and water damage

"No one could have convinced me 15 years ago that I'd ever find this type of water damage in buildings constructed from 1996-2007. The number of leaking and water damaged buildings is mind boggling, and it doesn't matter if it is an inexpensive condominium building or a high-end multi-million dollar home.
Huge numbers of buildings in the Chicago area were constructed incorrectly. They leak, and they're everywhere. People need to understand that old buildings and new buildings are completely different.  Old buildings are drafty, they don't have ton of plastic and vapor retardant materials, and the building lumber is old growth timber, which is full of toxic saps and oils that are extremely resistant to decay, mold, and moisture damage. Old buildings "breath". Moisture is rarely a problem.
New buildings have huge amounts of plastic materials, they don't "breath." They are loaded with tree-farm grown and engineered lumber that is structurally adequate if kept dry, but extremely susceptible to moisture problems. Wet tree-farm lumber grows mold quickly and the material rots. Even if there isn't any visible damage, there can be serious problems brewing. In addition, indoor air quality is greatly effected by moisture hidden in the walls causing mold growth. Read more
